A3F POLL

48 Hour Challenge 2013

Recap
The 9th Annual 48 Hour Short Film Challenge took place February 15-17, 2013 with 57 teams participating from Arizona and California. Several new teams joined A3F veterans producing the best 1-20 films in A3F history. Solid scripts, talented actors and entertaining stories created a remarkable night of independent films.

"I heard over and over from audience members that this was the best collection of films to screen together in the nine years of the festival," said Jae Staats, A3F Director and Founder. "People had smiles on their faces and it was just very rewarding to see."

This year's guidelines asked the filmmakers to create 1-5 minute films using the Theme, Something Magical, a Line of Dialogue, "I can't believe it worked." and a Ring as the Prop where one or more characters had to put on or take off a ring. The interpretation of these guidelines made for some very creative films.

"It was fun to see teams really dig into this year's guidelines and shape their films around the these parameters," remarked Jason Francois, a judge and Assistant A3F Director. "And the technical quality of the films this year was outstanding. Teams are definitely raising the bar a notch or two."

The kick-off party and drop-off location took place at Majerle's Sport Grill in downtown Phoenix. An absolutely packed 9 Lounge started the event on Friday, February 15. Filmmakers, cast and crew members jammed together to hear the revealing of this year's guidelines.

"When the 9 Lounge was almost full by 5:30p.m., I knew we were in for a special evening. It was just wall-to-wall energy and the announcement of the guidelines was fantastic!" said Jae.

Teams dodged traffic and sleep to make the trip to Majerle's to turn in their films on Sunday. "What a great group of filmmakers," recalled Jason. "Seeing all those tired faces and hearing about their 48 hour adventures, it just doesn't get better than this, so much passion for filmmaking." With 47 teams making the deadline, the judges' panel had their work cut out for them.

The Top 20 films were shown on February 28 at AMC Arizona Center 24 Theatres. The premier quickly sold-out and every single seat was taken for one of the most anticipated Top 20 Screenings. Everyone in attendance received a special A3F Something Magical wristband as the evening's ticket and then proceeded into the theatre to watch an amazing twenty films.

"Thank you for yet another great event. I thought this year's films were really entertaining." said Jessica Brown, who presented the Brock H. Brown Best Script award in honor of her son.

"The competition this year was the best yet and this was evidenced by the quality of films this year." -- Rob Edwards, audience member.

"Thank you to the A3F team for putting on the challenge, the quality of the 20 films tonight was the best grouping I have seen over the past few years." -- Diane Dresback, Producer of the overall winning film, Afterword."

"Wow, wow, wow! That was my first time at an A3F screening and it was awesome! The care and respect shown for the filmmakers really made the evening magical." -- Jane audience member.

The night's festivities concluded with the official After Party at 1130 The Restaurant where everyone relaxed, mingled and congratulated each other after another successful Almost Famous Film Festival.
